Lord Ullin's Daughter by Thomas Campbell.

“Lord Ullin’s Daughter” is a ballad which tells the tragic story of the daughter of Lord Ullin and her lover who die a very unhappy death when chased by her father and his soldiers.The poem begins with the daughter and her lover, the Scottish chieftain arriving at the banks of Lochgyle with the intention of escaping to a safer place . The lover offers the boatman a silver pound to cross them to safety. The weather is stormy and it is very dangerous to cross the Lochgyle in such a situation.The lover introduces himself as the chief of Ulva and that he is running from Lord Ullin’s soldiers. He tells the boatman that if the Lord’s soldiers catch him escaping with her daughter, they would immediately kill him. The boatman hesitates because agreeing can cost him death of him and the two. Then the beautiful daughter of Lord Ullin requests to the boatman; she says that she is ready to face the thundering storm but not her angry father. Finally, the boatman agrees to take them across Lochgyle, not for the money but for the innocence of the lady. They started their journey without caring for their lives. Soon Lord Ullin reaches the shore and sees his child in danger between the wild waves of the sea. Lord Ullin realizes his mistake and cries "Come Back!Come back!"seeing his daughter asking for help.But it was too late as  the water went over them and they were no more.

About the Author ;

Thomas Campbell , was a Scottish poet chiefly remembered for his sentimental poetry dealing especially with human affairs. A co-founder of the Literary Association of the Friends of Poland, he was also one of the initiators of a plan to found what became the University of London. In 1799, he wrote "The Pleasures of Hope", a traditional 18th century didactic poem in heroic couplets. He also produced several stirring patriotic war songs—"Ye Mariners of England", "The Soldier's Dream", "Hohenlinden" and in 1801, "The Battle of Mad and Strange Turkish Princes".

Impact On society ;

The poem has a positive impact on society.It does not support any offensive issues that are present in our society.The theme of this poem is love but it is also related to problems that are there in the society at present, Eg- 'HONOUR KILLING'.In many old villages and towns, people commit 'HONOUR KILLING'.They kill people just for their honour. They have a stereotype of thinking that their respect will decline in society if they do anything against their religion or protocols made by them.The poem also leaves a good message behind it that,'Hatred always leads to destruction in life,So it's better to embrace love in life and make it peaceful'.
